“A record number of Hereford cattle competed in the 2007 CNPHA Jr.
Jackpot Show, held Sunday, November 19, 2007 at the Amador County
Fairgrounds in Plymouth, CA.
Dozens of enthusiastic juniors were at the halters of the show heifers
and the show steers and the competition was intense. The quality
of the cattle was remarkable. As they entered the ring, it was a
sight that made you proud to be a Hereford breeder.
What makes this Jackpot Show unique is the fact that the fancy show
heifers and powerful show steers sold in the Hereford Classic Sale on
the previous day, are eligible to show in the Jackpot. For doing
so, they are given hefty financial rewards.
Every sale animal who is shown in the Jackpot wins an automatic $50
just for entering the class, no matter where they stand. The
highest placing sale heifers get an even sweeter treat. The
highest placing sale heifer wins $500, the 2nd highest placing sale
heifer wins $300 and the 3rd highest placing heifer takes home $200, in
addition to a pro-rated share of the jackpot.
Casey Overmier, had the biggest payday. The excellent heifer she
purchased from the Alto family, Arcata, CA, placed the highest of all
the sale heifers. Also, another heifer Casey entered was picked
as Grand Champion Heifer. When it was all said and done, Casey
took home a fat paycheck totaling $1,125.
The Reserve Grand Champion Heifer award went to Caitlyn Hartzell,
winning $150. The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Jacob Dorr
who won $150, and the Reserve Grand Champion steer was shown by Nicole
Reis. Along with her other winnings Nicole pocketed a nice check
of $265.
Winning the 2nd Highest Placing Sale Heifer award was Alex Whitney, who
took home $440 total, and nabbing the 3rd Highest Placing Sale Heifer
award was Mary Mc Callister, who collected $290 in all.
The 11th Annual CNPHA Jr. Jackpot Show will be held November 16, 2008,
